One of these things is not like the other
JMUDuke makes this great catch:
Chairwoman of the Tennessee Republican Party Robin Smith suggesting equivalency between 1) the disrupted plot by white supremacists to perpetrate the mass murder of African American school children and assassination of Barack Obama, and 2) a Halloween display featuring Sarah Palin hung in effigy.
The Halloween display is tasteless, unfunny and absolutely not befitting support for a candidate who has consistently shown maturity and an immense talent for transcending the identity politics that have so divided us. One thing it is not is a genuine threat. Another thing it is not: Symbolic of actual hate crimes visited on actual people of other races by actual white supremacists. Those enraged ghosts are making themselves known, disbelieving as they are that our future has no place for them. The failure to recognize the vast, inexpressible difference between these events is yet another, final(?) indication of how tone-deaf the hard core right (apparently entirely in control of the McCain campaign now) has become. Sad.
