JOB TITLE: Political Polling Analyst
DEPARTMENT: Political
JOB GRADE: IV
REPORTS TO: Deputy Director
*Temporary fund through December 31, 2010
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Political Department provides union members with opportunities to make their voices heard in the political arena, informs members about candidates’ positions on important working family issues conducts
get-out-the-vote activities.
The Political Targeting Analyst analyzes campaign and polling data, and works in design, implementation and analysis of experimental results.
The Political Polling Analyst works under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Political
Strategy.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
• Analyze polling data for campaign strategy
• Analyze macro data (US Census, NCEC, etc.) for broad analysis political environment
• Design and analyze experiments
• Design survey instruments
• Perform multi-method data mining of public opinion data
• Generate candidate and issue support models
• Present quantitative information clearly and concisely
REPORTING
Keeps the Director fully informed on a regular basis on issues affecting departmental programs.
Prepares and submits regular and ad hoc reports on departmental activities as required.
OTHER
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
College degree in related field or equivalent experience.
Skills
• Demonstrated analytical creativity, problem-solving abilities, and experience with communication via
data analysis (using Excel, Access, SQL, etc.)
• Familiarity with principles of political targeting, politics and/or political campaigning
• Demonstrated interest in progressive causes – including experience with political campaign(s),
government or public interest groups
• Robust familiarity with experimental design and statistical techniques for testing significance and interaction of data and results.
Software Requirements:
• Strong MS Excel skills and experience with several of the following programs:
• Database interface and/or programming (MySQL, MS Access, FoxPro, etc.)
• Statistics (Stata, SPSS, R, etc.)
• Mapping (ArcGIS or other)

TITLE: Support Coordinator for Political Field Operations

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Material/Data Mobilization:
• Work with the approved printers on shipping and interface issues around the WFT operation;
• Monitor activities of the approved printers on the WFT;
• Assist users (field staff, State Fed;s, CLC’s/ALF’s and affiliates) with problems or issues on the
functionality or use of the WFT;
• Work with the Politics & Field Department Office Manager on the production of all necessary paperwork
required by the Accounting Department for payment of invoices;
• Post & Modify PDF documents using Adobe Acrobat to enable customization of materials posted on the WFT;
• Approve materials requested on the WFT in accordance with AFL-CIO security policies;
• Run reports for senior staff as requested on activities on the WFT.
Other:
• Process all incoming ID results from door-to-door canvases and volunteer phone campaigns nationwide;
• Provide logistical support as the first point of contact for Field Staff;
• Oversee and track the distribution of all campaign materials;
• Other duties as assigned.

Overview of Responsibilities:
The Political Department provides union members with opportunities to make their voices heard in the political arena, informs members about candidates’ positions on important working family issues conducts get-out-the-vote activities.
The Labor Action Network (LAN) System Assistant Administrator will work on our new secure web based tool assisting our field staff assigned to Labor 2010, our national affiliates, and other approved users with
creating counts, running product, uploading results from field activities, monitoring usage, and creating
output reports.
Description of Duties:
• Assist in coordinating the day-to-day operation of the Labor Action Network.
• Monitoring the usage of the LAN and making sure that all activities conform to the AFL-CIO Executive Council policy on membership list security.
• Create templates on the reports part of the LAN system for walks, membership phone contacts, mailings, and e-mail communications.
• Offer first level technical support to approved users on the operation of the LAN system.
• Produce reports on the use of the LAN for the Director & Deputy Director of the Political Department, Affiliate leadership, and other approved leadership.
• Maintain the approved users database.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Some experience developing, designing and creating databases.
• Familiarity with application development a plus.
• Demonstrated experience with CSV, Access, and Excel databases.
• Experience in electoral politics and experience with issue campaigns.
• Knowledge of and experience with both national and local structures of the labor movement.
• Experience with the labor movement required and knowledge of the labor political program a plus.
• Experience coordinating a component of a political campaign.
• Experience developing message materials for political or issue campaigns.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Writer/Researcher works as part of a team that serves as the research and materials creation arm of the AFL-CIO Political department. The Writer/Researcher will research political candidates and campaign issues and write communications materials and fact sheets used in the political program to communicate to members about candidates and issues important to working families. He or she will work with state, local and national staff to develop the materials and messaging used in the races assigned.
The Writer/Researcher will work under the direction of the Senior Writer/Researcher.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
• Work with the member communications team to write member communications materials such as flyers, local union letters, newsletter articles, and phone scripts on candidates and legislative priorities.
• Conduct ongoing research on political candidates and legislative issues.
• Create, maintain and update research documents for use by the Political Department, Media Outreach and Publications as the basis of many different facets of member and external communications.
• Keep track of candidate statements, actions, and votes on working families’ issues.
• Write summaries and briefings with pertinent information on the candidates for departmental use.
• Work with lead state staff to ensure the materials produced satisfy the needs of the field program.
• Fact check direct mail pieces.
• Track the progress of the materials you write through the design, posting, and approval process.
• Serve as primary point of contact for the political research/materials team when the Sr.
Writer/Researcher is not available.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• BA or BS in related field.
• 3-4 years experience in political or issue campaigns with specific demonstrated experience in
campaign/political research and communications.
• Effective time management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects, including demonstrated experience in developing campaign and/or personal work plans and goals.
• Excellent computer skills including web-based and Lexis-Nexis research.
• Must be proficient at Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Demonstrated superior writing and messaging skills – writing sample required.
• Demonstrated ability to adjust tone and arguments for a variety of audiences.
• Ability to assess political issues and identify relevant information for a Labor political program.

political materials for Labor 2010 Powerpoint presentations and trainings.
• Customize Labor 2010 powerpoints and training materials for state federations, CLC’s and ALF’s.
• Customize Labor 2010 powerpoints and training materials for AFL-CIO affiliates and sectors.
• Customize Labor 2010 powerpoints for presentations by the Political Director.
• Generate reports from survey and experimental research for campaign strategies.
• Work with analysts to generate materials that feed into the data-driven narrative.
• Work within the Political Department to supply analytic research materials to all facets of the
political program.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
