Loudoun County Democrats Call for Passage of Four Constitutional Amendments

Leesburg, VA – The Loudoun County Democratic Committee strongly supports the four constitutional amendments passed by both the Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate, and calls on Virginians to vote “yes” to protect fundamental rights, strengthen democracy, and hold those in power accountable.

These amendments are a direct response to coordinated efforts nationwide to roll back hard-won freedoms and undermine representative government. Having now cleared both chambers of the General Assembly, they will move forward to the voters. Together, they would:

  • Protect reproductive freedom and access to abortion care as a constitutional right in Virginia, safeguarding bodily autonomy from extremist attacks;

  • Automatically restore voting rights to Virginians with felony convictions once they have completed their sentences, expanding democracy and ending discriminatory voter suppression;

  • Remove the outdated ban on same-sex marriage and permanently enshrine marriage equality in the Virginia Constitution, ensuring these rights are protected in our Commonwealth regardless of rollbacks or reversals at the national level; and

  • Allow limited mid-decade congressional redistricting to stop partisan manipulation of Virginia’s congressional maps, directly pushing back against the current U.S. administration’s efforts to rig the House of Representatives in order to preserve political power.

At a moment when democracy is under sustained attack, Virginians face a clear choice. These amendments put power back where it belongs, with voters, not politicians. The redistricting amendment in particular is essential to pushing back against the current administration’s efforts to manipulate congressional maps for partisan gain and entrench political power at the expense of voters and communities.

Between now and April, the Loudoun County Democratic Committee will be fully mobilized to educate voters, organize our grassroots volunteers, and turn out the vote to pass the redistricting amendment and all four constitutional amendments.

This is not optional. It is a necessary fight for the future of democracy in Virginia. Virginia’s Constitution must be a shield for rights, not a tool for political gamesmanship. The Loudoun County Democratic Committee urges Virginians to vote “yes” on all four amendments and stands ready to do the work required to win.
