Loudoun Democrats Support Inclusive 2028-2029 LCPS School Calendar; Republicans Do Not

Leesburg, VA – The Loudoun County Democratic Committee supports the Loudoun County School Board’s decision to adopt the Rashid calendar option, as amended, for the 2028-2029 school year.

Loudoun County is one of the most diverse communities in Virginia, with families representing an extraordinary range of cultures, faiths, and traditions. Our public institutions should recognize and respect the diversity of the community they serve.

LCDC thanks Dr. Sumera Rashid, April Chandler, Anne Donohue, Ross Svenson, and Jon Pepper for voting in support of a diverse and inclusive school calendar that reflects the community our schools serve.

The school calendar has generated significant community discussion about instructional time, scheduling, and the recognition of religious and cultural observances. We appreciate the parents, students, educators, and community members who participated in that process and shared their perspectives with the School Board.

LCDC supports a school calendar that recognizes Loudoun’s diverse culture and population. Students and families from across our county should see their communities and traditions respected within our public school system, and families should not have to choose unnecessarily between important religious or cultural observances and their children’s education.

Developing a school calendar for a community as large and diverse as Loudoun requires balancing many considerations. Inclusion and respect for the many communities that call Loudoun home should remain an important part of that process.
